Review of laptops/notebooks in India ISPs in India Contact us Computers in India Home
If you own a website, there can be problems at the most unlikely time, so it is advisable to buy a laptop which you can carry with you wherever you go. The major brands in the Indian market are HP, Compaq, Dell, IBM (Lenovo), Toshiba, Sony , Sahara, iBall and Acer. These companies advertise extensively in local newspapers. More laptops which cost less Rs 40,000 have a Celeron CPU. Holbe Dialogue, India will be selling their portable tablet PC , Flybook through JDS Technologies , Kolkatta. Pricing is not known. Dell offers laptop with good specifications (Centrino, 512MB RAM, Windows XP preloaded) and value for money (about Rs 45000 advertised in August 2006) . However, you have to prepay 15 days in advance and wait for delivery. After you place an order, they laptop is manufactured at their factory in Malaysia. You have to send a signed copy of their invoice, a declaration and scanned copy of your draft by fax. These documents also have to be sent by courier to them at your own cost. Also their sales people are sometimes very rude and you will be put on hold for very long when you call their toll free number. Some users have reported that the notebooks are not very sturdy and unsuitable for Indian conditions (potholed roads, etc)
HP/Compaq laptops are more expensive compared to Dell , Rs 52,000- Rs 53,00 for a similar configuration. They seem to be the only manufacturer offering laptops with a AMD CPU, but the weight is more, about 2.8 kg , while Centrino Laptops weigh 2.3 kg. A lightweight model (about 1.7kg) will cost more and the CPU speed , RAM will be less. All laptops have an internal dial up modem. Their customer support at their call center is good (Since I have purchased a number of desktops earlier ), their dealer called me up promptly. They seem to be most flexible about pricing. Weight is an important factor while selecting laptops, since carrying heavy laptops for long periods can cause back problems. AMD laptops have a longer delivery time compared to Intel CPU laptops.
IBM/ Lenovo laptops are advertised extensively in newspapers, but their dealers do not seem interested in contacting prospective customers. The configuration and price is inferior to that of HP/Compaq/Dell. Only models costing more than Rs 55,000, have an internal modem required for dialup internet connections.
Toshiba and Sony are 2 other brands which I checked. Toshiba is marketed by HCl in India, their salesman did not bother to call. Sony laptops are expensive, but their dealers were happy to answer queries. They mainly sell through their showrooms in the Western Suburbs of Mumbai. Most laptop manufacturers do not offer onsite warranty (unlike desktops), so if there is a problem with your laptop, you have to spend half a day or more visiting their service center. If a part is not available at the service center, you will have to visit the service center again. Troubleshoot and fix your computer problems
